Forest health and resilience in the era of climate change

Stakeholder field trip

22 - 25 September, Estonia

Join us for a field trip to Estonia to explore forest diseases that occur with particular frequency in the region compared to other parts of Europe, and to develop skills in identifying them in the field.

Co-organised by the SNS and network TolerantTree, the excursion will offer a platform for discussing forest management and regeneration approaches, including continuous cover forestry (CCF) and mixed-species planting, and their role in supporting long-term forest health and resilience.

  • 22 September

    Arrival in Tallinn, flights to Tallinn arrive from the most important destination in the evening, and most departures leave in the morning.

    23 September

    Bus Pick-up at the Mercure Tallinn Hotel at 9 am

    10:30 Arrival at Kullenga is no longer a traditional nursery seed management centre including  a stop at Betula pendula progeny trial, as well as visits to seed orchards, processing and  seed storage facilities with hosts  from the  State Forest Management Centre.

    LUNCH

    Afternoon visit to forest stands managed through  continuous‑cover forestry around Kullenga and in Lahemaa National Park. Here preliminary results from Precilience will be presented and discussed

    Evening arrival at accommodation in Rakvere.

    24 September

    Ca 9 am Bus pick-up in Rakvere travel to Avispea experimental site

    At Avispea Tiit Maaten will describe the trial and Kateryna Davydenko will present damage patterns on Scots pine in the trial and sister sites in Sweden  

    Lunch

    Visit to  the Tarumaa progeny trial with local material, Tiit Maaten will guide us

    Around 14:30 -15:00 pm return to Tallinn

    Arrival in Tallinn around 17:00 (Maybe at Ferry terminal boat to Sweden leaves at 18:00)

    25 September

    Travel home.

Participation is free of charge. Travel expenses are the responsibility of each participant. Early-career researchers (ECRs) may apply for a TolerantTree travel grant to cover their costs.
